Our school grows from a family of Montessori schools whose roots reach back to 1960 — and to one of the very first Montessori schools in the United States.
Great Montessori schools are not built overnight. Behind every prepared classroom stand decades of experience, mentorship, and love for children. The story of our school is the story of a Montessori tradition passed carefully from one generation of educators to the next — and now taking root in Carlsbad Village under the guidance of Executive Director Pamela Crisman.
Our founding school is established in Santa Monica as one of the first Montessori schools in the United States — originally known as Sophia Montessori School, on the corner of 20th Street and Arizona Avenue.
Educator Ruth Dresser acquired the school, renamed it, and grew it significantly — expanding through the 8th grade and founding a Montessori teacher-training institute with the support of prominent Montessori educators.
The school moved to a dedicated campus, continuing its tradition of authentic Montessori education for a growing community of families.
Mrs. Pamela Crisman became School Director, bringing extensive Montessori experience and overseeing major improvements in facilities, staff training, academics, and classroom resources.
The school celebrated 50 years of Montessori education — a half-century of nurturing children’s independence and love of learning.
That same heritage of authentic Montessori practice lives on at Carlsbad Village Montessori School, welcoming toddlers, early childhood, and kindergarten children at our campus on Pine Avenue.
With decades of leadership in Montessori education, Pamela Crisman moved back to Carlsbad to serve as the full-time Executive Director of Carlsbad Village Montessori School, carrying forward a tradition of excellence built over generations. Her commitment to authentic Montessori practice, warm community, and academic strength shapes every classroom.
Under her guidance, children are met with respect, challenged with rich work, and supported to become confident, capable, and kind.
We’d love to welcome your family into this living Montessori tradition.
